The Carnatic Preparatory course is designed for the aspirant who has an appreciation of Carnatic music but has never learned the music in the shiksha paddhathi. Carnatic vocal classes are adaptation of the initial pedagogical lessons, and will prepare the student for the pace and demands of the Intermediate course.
Voice Training:
nThe curriculum is delivered in combination with Scientific Voice Development. Music teachers are trained in the concepts and principles of Frederick Husler, adapted to the needs of Indian Music by Ananth Vaidyanathan. The human voice is naturally a singing voice, irrespective of musical talent. Musical tone and skills are innate potentials of the human voice. The voice is developed by activating its potential nature through simple songs and allowing it grow easily and naturally along a path of increasing musical complexities.

Carnatic music is one of the most complex musical genres in the world. The complex grammar and aesthetics of Carnatic ragas, their highly nuanced gamakas, the great compositions – all require deep conditioning of the mind, voice and aesthetic sense. The celebrated Carnatic shiksha paddhathi – the system of basic training, is one of the most brilliant pedagogical systems in music. This series of online Carnatic music classes is built on the basis of this Paddhathi, combining the inculcation of exercises along with development of song sense.

Carnatic music performance demands command over raga grammar, complex gamakas, the highly mathematical sense that goes into the rhythmic dimension of music, and finally the genius of improvisation that demands extraordinary levels of creativity in melody, rhythm and voice. The Advanced Carnatic singing course takes the student towards the direction of high level performance in a methodical manner – creating a solid base of techniques, concepts and skills that the student can build on over a lifetime of continuous growth as an artist.

The curriculum for south Indian Classical Music is delivered in combination with Scientific Voice Development. Teachers are trained in the concepts and principles of Frederick Husler, adapted to the needs of Indian Music by Ananth Vaidyanathan. The human voice is naturally a singing voice, irrespective of musical talent. Musical tone and skills are innate potentials of the human voice. The voice is developed by activating its potential nature through simple songs and allowing it grow easily and naturally along a path of increasing musical complexities.

Candidate should be exposed to Karnataka classical music and have a taste for it.
He or she must have a natural sense of pitching and rhythm.

To enrol in the Artium Carnatic vocal music, the candidate should have learned the basic exercises earlier, at least upto Alankaram.
The purpose of the Artium Intermediate course will be to inculcate the voice techniques into the practice of the exercises and simultaneously move to Carnatic repertoire training.

The applicant should have completed the Artium Intermediate Carnatic classical music course in order to have understood and imbibed the voice techniques that are fundamental to the Artium method.
If the applicant is well versed with the repertoire level of the Intermediate Course, he will need to imbibe the voice techniques alone and move on to the advanced level. This will be at the discretion of the trainer.

    Good command over the swara exercises of Carnatic music - be habituated and adept in practicing them with the right vocal technique.

    Be able to recognise and locate swaras and basic scales

    Have a good exposure to different Carnatic forms - Geetham, Varnam, simple Kriti, Namavali and Tukda.

    Have a good sense of voice and relate voice sense to gamaka, thaya and different ornamentations.

    Have a sense of raga as an aesthetic and theoretical concept.

    Develop a good foundation of tala sense and knowledge

    Be eligible to give a full fledged Carnatic concert.

    Be able to perform alapana, tanam, niraval and kalpana swaram in accordance with proper principles.

    Have good command over the musical and vocal ethos of Carnatic music – the raga bhava, the gamakas and the aesthetics of raga and different composition forms – varnam, kriti, thillana etc.

    Have a reasonable repertoire of compositions across forms and major composers.
