2. Genesis

Before singing the famous “In the Air Tonight”, Phil Collins was the man behind the drums for Genesis. When Genesis’s then frontman Peter Gabriel departed, Phil filled the vocal boots with his pop sensibilities, resulting in a staggering sound. His debut album with Iron Maiden, “The Number of the Beast”, was their breakthrough album. His stage presence, air-raid-siren-like vocals, and theatrics took the band to new heights. Amidst their hiatus, Neal Schon, the founder of the band, came across YouTube videos of Arnel Pineda performing cover songs of bands like Journey, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles and more. Journey made a desperate gamble by bringing in a lesser-known singer from Manila to lead the band. Steve Perry, the most successful singer of the band, had left an impossible void to fill.

6. Pink Floyd

Faith No More had two defining eras in their career: First, the Chuck Mosley era and then, the Mike Patton era. Mike Patton replaced Chuck Mosley in 1988 after the latter was fired due to erratic behaviour. The arrival of Mike Patton transformed Faith No More from alternative rock experimenters to genre-defining pioneers. His incredible vocal versatility and boundary-pushing approach helped them to create “The Real Thing”, an album that influenced countless bands for decades.

10. Alice in Chains

One of the biggest Grunge bands, Alice in Chains, has created music that has defined the genre. Layne Staley, the band’s iconic former frontman, along with Jerry Cantrell (Guitars), made music that put Seattle on the world map. Due to addiction struggles and the eventual death of Layne Staley, the band was inactive till 2006. A charity event saw the band coming back with current frontman William DuVall. He brought his own style and did not try to imitate Staley, which was well received by the fans.

Under this new lineup, the band released 3 commercially successful albums and received multiple Grammy nominations. The change in frontman was not a simple replacement but a necessary evolution that allowed Alice in Chains to overcome a devastating loss. The addition of DuVall honored the past while forging a new, successful path forward.

Stone Temple Pilots

Another one of the Grunge royalty, Stone Temple Pilots, with Scott Weiland (Ex-frontman), had become an acclaimed band. Following his departure from the band, the band cycled through multiple frontmen, including Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington and current singer Jeff Gutt. Although these frontmen were brilliant in their craft, none of them captured the original music that made STP a grunge royalty.

INXS

INXS’s attempts to continue after Michael Hutchence’s death, including a reality TV competition to find a new singer, highlighted the irreplaceable nature of some frontmen. Despite various talented vocalists, the band never recaptured its former glory.

Judas Priest

Rob Halford was an integral part of Judas Priest. Following his departure in 1992, the band welcomed Tim “Ripper” Owens. With him, they released two albums, “Jugulator” and “Demolition”, which were not very well-received by fans and saw their popularity dwindle. Ultimately, Rob Halford returned in 2003.
