Control Your Breath

- Try the start-pause method. Adjust the depth and length of your breath for 30-45 seconds, then pause and start again for another 30-45 seconds.
- Do soft breathing exercises like inhaling softly and slowly to feel the breath travel through your body. If done right, it’ll feel like air is dropping into your lungs rather than being forced to inhale.
- The 4 second rule is to breathe in – hold the breath – release the breath. Do all these for 4 seconds each and increase the time as you cycle back through the process.
- Completely exhale the air out of your body until you feel the emptiness in your lungs, and then take another breath and do the same process.
Know Your Vocal Range and Voice Type

- Train your tongue to rest on the roof of your mouth like an octopus’s tentacles. Your tongue should ideally be resting half an inch behind your upper front teeth. Here’s an easy way to find the right positions: just say “nah-nah-nah” and rest the tip of the tongue where ‘N’ is spelt.
- The next step is to swallow three times without letting your tongue leave the roof of your mouth. If you can manage that, yawn and lower your larynx without letting your tongue off the roof of the mouth.
- The next step is to make the chipmunk sound. Suck in the front body of the tongue towards the roof of your mouth to make a chipmunk sound. It will almost sound like grandma’s disapproving “tut-tut-tut” when you were being bad. Repeat as quickly as possible, like 10-15 seconds.
- So this is another cluck of the tongue you make by bending the top of your tongue back and flicking it through to knock it down on your bottom front teeth. It should produce a high-pitched, crisp sound that mimics the movement to create an ‘l’. Do this as fast as you can for 10–15 seconds.
- Finally, say ‘k’ as fast and rhythmically as you can. Here, we do not want the air to escape greatly. Americans tend to give an aspirated ‘k’, which breathes out a lot of air when pronounced. Make the ‘k’ sound as dry as possible and reduce the amount of air you allow to flow through. Cycle back and forth as quickly as you can for 10–15 seconds.
