Gaan Saraswati Kishori Amonkar once said that a singer must never let a raag sound mechanical, that every note must carry bhava—a living, breathing emotion. Her most celebrated disciple, Devaki Pandit, has lived by this philosophy for over four decades.
She was born into music, shaped by the Jaipur-Atrauli and Agra gharanas, and began performing on stage at the age of 9. Under the tutelage of legends like Pt. Jitendra Abhisheki, Vasantrao Kulkarni, and Pt. Babanrao Haldankar, she built a voice deeply rooted in classical grammar and distinctly expressive.
Her talent is enshrined in India's highest institutions, with her being conferred the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and the Kesarbai Kerkar Scholarship (twice). She has also won the Maharashtra State Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer. Not just that, she has brought the warmth of classical music into mainstream Hindi cinema, with her voice gracing Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa (1994), starring Shah Rukh Khan. Her collaborations with Pt. Hridayanath Mangeshkar, Ustad Zakir Hussain, and Gulzar prove that the truest classical musicians are also the most versatile.
