About Popular Music Theory

Popular Music Theory is theory the way a working band musician uses it: reading and writing notation, harmony for popular styles, knowledge of how instruments and bands work, and analysing real tracks.

The exam is taken online with remote invigilation - all you need is a computer and an internet connection - and Grades 6โ€“8 carry UCAS points.

The grade ladder

Each rung, what it expects, and where it sits on the qualification framework.

  1. Debut

    RQF Entry Level 3

    Basic notation, simple rhythms, and the names of the instruments in a band.

  2. Grades 1โ€“3

    RQF Level 1

    Keys, scales, chords, and rhythm reading; how guitar, bass, drums, keys, and vocals are written for.

  3. Grades 4โ€“5

    RQF Level 2

    Seventh chords, chord progressions, song forms, and analysis of full band charts.

  4. Grades 6โ€“8

    RQF Level 3

    Extended harmony, arranging, production knowledge, and in-depth analysis - with UCAS points.
