About Theory of Music
Trinity’s Theory of Music syllabus takes a practical view of theory: the workbooks present notation, rhythm, harmony, and analysis in short, colourful units that connect directly to what students play. It runs from Grade 1 to Grade 8.
Unlike some boards, Trinity does not require a theory grade before any practical exam. Theory is there to strengthen playing - and Grades 6–8 carry their own UCAS points.

The grade ladder
Each rung, what it expects, and where it sits on the qualification framework.
Grade 1
RQF Level 1Note values, time signatures, treble and bass clefs, simple scales and intervals.
Grade 2
RQF Level 1More keys, minor scales, tonic triads, and rhythm grouping.
Grade 3
RQF Level 1Compound time, transposition, primary chords, and simple cadences.
Grade 4
RQF Level 2Chromatic scales, alto clef, seventh chords, and phrase structure.
Grade 5
RQF Level 2Harmony in four parts, modulation, ornaments, and score reading - the theory landmark most teachers aim for.
Grade 6
RQF Level 3Harmonic analysis, figured bass, and writing for instruments. Earns UCAS points.
Grade 7
RQF Level 3Extended harmony, composition techniques, and stylistic analysis.
Grade 8
RQF Level 3Advanced analysis and composition across historical styles.

Paper-based at an exam centre, or digital on-demand from home where available (including India).

Pair theory with your practical grade
A rule of thumb: sit the theory grade one or two below your practical grade so what you write about is what you are already playing.
Work through the Trinity workbook
Each grade has a workbook with short exercises; Artium’s Western music theory lessons and exercises on this site cover the same ground interactively.
Sit Grade 5 as a milestone
Grade 5 Theory is widely recognised and a common requirement elsewhere - it is a strong credential even though Trinity does not mandate it.
Continue to Grades 6–8 for UCAS points
Theory Grades 6–8 add 4–10 UCAS points on top of practical grades.
